(Hundreds of Species described and photographed)

Lough Allen Basin is a major geographical area in the North West of Ireland. It is a medium sized Lake with the 3 towns of Drumshanbo, Drumkeeran, and Dowra at its 3 corners. The Basin embraces 3 counties but most of it lies in Co. Leitrim. Leitrim is Ireland’s smallest county, in terms of population, but quite elongated. With a population of only 28,000 there is loads of space to grow. Lough Allen neatly separates the county into a southern and a northern half. This site is dedicated to the aim of researching and conserving the unique environment  of the area to meet the needs of the young educated people growing up in this region.

A rare Spring scene at Corry Beach. (April 3rd 2013)

What a Spring? This season has been one of the coldest and wettest. The above photograph was one of the good days. Even still, over a month later, the weather is cold (4.5°C midday on 11th May), squally, and blustery. Image above is where we often launch our boat for work at the north end of L. Allen. That day, and often since, the shore has been clean like this; we have often seen pollution here. Is the problem affecting L. Allen getting better? We would like to think so... but elsewhere we have seen worrying signs of persisting water contamination.

Unfortunately present weather conditions limits the amount of time we can get out on the lake.

Biodiversity Studies 2013, can be listed as follows:

Significant Breeding Water Birds (Merganser, 3 Gull Species, Tern, Sandpipers, Curlew, Lapwing) / Migration of other Wading birds (Whimbrel, Greenshank, Plover, etc.) Observations on Game birds & Raptors / Daubenton Bat population studies / Mammal observations particularly Otter and Pine Marten / Rare plant monitoring esp. Ladys Tresses and Small White orchids but also varied other interesting flora around the basin / Habitat documentation and Protection.

Idea and Images.

We outline Ideas and Aspirations regarding the social development and environmental conservation of the Lough Allen Basin. We have always felt that it was for the Community (and those of you looking in from elsewhere) to respond to these ideas. We show Images of nature and beauty and wild landscapes to inspire you, and to persuade you, to think of this as a good place for your Enterprise!

Scientists, Researchers, Conservationists...
Wanna help us getting to know this wonderful Environment. See our unique Species and still pristine landscape. All those contacts from Overseas... thank you so much! (Contact details on Left.)

Lough Allen’s water needs some work. We have done much Study and Research reported in Links below.)

ProtectOurWater.ie is, of course, the name and slogan of the Septic Tank Registration scheme. With respect, we think this is a good idea and ask you to back it. Our research shows some modern Septic Tanks add foam to our streams. We all need clean water and this needs to be watched and protected...

We support the concept of full remediation costs (for faulty installations based on recent planning guidelines) being covered by the State. It’s simply natural justice. Please view the evidence we have for these claims and beliefs in the Index below.

We have been in contact with the EPA in an effort to get Lough Allen’s changing water quality remedied. They have been supportive. We have recently sent a discussion document to them on our views, and views reported to us; also suggesting ways to get this fixed. Details of this discussion are also included in the Index below:

Unfortunately, the positive things suggested below have become a bit squeezed. We still believe in them and have hope for them...

A good Place for Business... with its 12.5% Tax and Tarriff free access to a Market of 500m. people. Leitrim has several major employers but further suitable initiatives would be very welcome. MORE
Unique Landscape and Ecology. When the Sun shines nowhere is nicer... a hot sunny day out on the Lake! It can be wet but rarely cold. Ice and Snow may change the Lake in the middle of Winter... as we have discovered when surveying its Wildlife! MORE
... at the Heart of Europe! For over 25 years Ireland has been a major Centre for FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) needing both access to the EU Market and a highly educated workforce. MORE
Hi Tech. Employment. Many of the World’s leading Companies are based in Ireland; most of leading new Medicines are made here! These sectors are still enjoying major growth in their level of exports! MORE

Investors, Employers, High Tech Industry...
Why not think of establishing a European Base in a tranquil setting with easy access and available workforce.

Environment & Employment

The Lough Allen Basin contains a unique landscape of lakes, mountains, cliff, moorlands and bogs. In this Site some significant and unique natural elements are highlighted... plant, animal and rock! People have tended to leave this place. Now with first rate education and modern technology the Lough Allen area has become the ideal place for High Tech Employment. A new technical and scientific community in the area will benefit everyone and help protect our unique habitat.
